I do not hesitate to use my treadles when ever the urge strikes me. But all these can be repaired and the cabinet returned to full service. Yes age and improper storage will damage the finish and exposure to high humidity will cause the veneer to delaminate. It's when they get abused, used as flower pot stands or aquarium stands that they get ruined. When used with normal care you will not wear one out. I have a number of treadles in original cabinets.

My budget solution for an everyday use treadle cabinet was to put an electric sewing machine table top ($35 for machine and table from a thrift store) on top of treadle irons ($25 garage sale find). If I used them every day they'd probably wear out pretty quickly. I have two antique treadle cabinets, and neither one is in the greatest shape. I guess you'd buy one of those cabinets if you have extra money you don't know what else to do with and want to invest in furniture that you can pass down to the next few generations? Or maybe antique just doesn't fit in with your decor? The Janome 712T doesn't compare favorably to vintage machines, of course, but it does sew knit fabrics and elastic better than my vintage machines do. If anyone is curious about the Janome 712T sewing machine that is sold an an option with those cabinets, I wrote up a review of it. Lehman's seems to always have higher prices than other places selling the same thing. Those same treadle cabinets are slightly less expensive at Cottage Craft Works.
